Summary

Following the sharp increases observed in June and July, fluctuations in average diesel prices have moderated over the past two months, with combined changes totaling just $0.03 compared to the $0.28 surge recorded earlier in the summer. Despite the relative stability in recent weeks, annual comparisons strengthened notably in September, with average diesel prices rising $0.19 YoY compared to just $0.04 higher YoY in August.

On a weekly basis, the Department of Energy (DOE)/Energy Information Administration (EIA) benchmark diesel price trended mostly upward throughout September. Average prices increased by nearly $0.06 during the first two weeks of the month before retreating $0.03 WoW in the third week. Modest gains resumed in the final two weeks, with a combined increase of approximately $0.02, signaling continued but restrained upward momentum in fuel markets heading into the fourth quarter.
