The refrigerated sector performed the best of the three major modes as early produce demand led to higher average spot rates.

National Reefer Spot Rates Excluding Fuel Surcharge

Key Points

  • The national average reefer spot rate, excluding fuel, increased by 5.5% MoM, or just over $0.10, in May to $1.95.
  • On an annual basis, average reefer spot linehaul rates were up 1.0% YoY compared to May 2024 but were 2.9% lower than the LT average.
  • Initially reported average reefer contract linehaul rates fell by 0.3% MoM, or roughly $0.01, and were 2.5% lower YoY compared to May 2024.

Key Points

  • The reefer LTR jumped 28.7% MoM to 10.67 in May, up from the 8.29 recorded in April.
  • Compared to May 2024, the reefer LTR was up 69.9% YoY and was 52.3% higher than the 5-year average.
  • DAT load board data for May recorded a 29.3% MoM increase in load post volumes for reefers while equipment posts registered just 0.5% higher MoM.
